When you are choosing the type of alloy that you are going to choose to use it is important to choose the right one. If you do not choose the right alloy especially when you are talking about automobiles it can cause some serious problems. For instance it can cause puncture in the tanks and pipes, which will allow the fluid or the gas to leak. It can also cause the loss of strength where the cross section of structural members is reduced by corrosion. And this then leads to a loss of strength to the structure and then it will lead to failure.
One of the more common types of alloy that is used for corrosion resistance is stain less steel. The reason that this kind is the more commonly used is because it works well when you really need resistance to heat. Another reason that stainless steel is commonly used is because it has low maintenance and it is affordable.
This type of alloy works very well for automobiles because it is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion is when it begins to deteriorate because it is exposed frequently to oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sulfur and chlorine compounds. Anything from the atmosphere; that will cause the alloy to become corroded.
For automobiles it is used for many different parts. For example outer and inner plates of automobiles, exhaust gas system, as well as the muffler and an exhaust manifold. In the past few years the use of stainless steel for automobiles has increased. The reason that it has increased is because for one it works great for corrosion resistance. As an alternative coated steel sheets, Al coated steel sheet for fuel tanks, Sn-Zn coated steel sheets have been developed and already supplied for many customers.
In the field of social and industrial infrastructures, corrosion protection technology, including its evaluation methods, should be developed together with the establishment of the corresponding research system and its members. In addition, plentifully accumulated knowledge of corrosion protection should be systematically organized so that it can be used to meet the demand of further development for the future.
